Cyclocross Training
Author Last Post
Ward Parkway CX tomorrow night. Leaving my place (84th and Mercier) at 6:30.
I'm not going to be able to make it to CX Training this week.

Hit the single track for a few laps, lining up in order of speed.
Ride the hill, run the hill.
Ride the grass, dismount and run with the bike, re-mount and ride the grass again.

Had a blast last night.

I would like to suggest maybe next time we do the single track, we break it up into our Cat categories for the TT. I think this will give a little more push to catch the rider(s) ahead of you?
For those of us that raced at Hermann Cross over the weekend, we have a pretty good idea of what we need to work on.

Tuesday night at Leawood Park, we will be working on cornering. We will start with some hot laps to get warmed up. We will then move to the grass for some power intervals with hills. To finish, we will do several laps in the singletrack trails to work on smooth cornering.

If you have lights, bring them just in case it gets dark in the trails.

6:30 start time. I may switch it up so that we are in the trails earlier with more light.

Meet at the tennis courts.

I'm rolling Ward Parkway again on Wednesday. Leaving my home on 84th and Mercier at 6:30.
I'm going to ride Ward Parkway tonight as long as it is not raining. I'll ride the grass and curb cuts and dismount and run where they are absent, then hill repeats on 55th street. I'm sure the rain will soften up the grass and give some good resistance for training. I plan to leave my home on 84th and Mercier at 6:30 and head north on the Parkway.
I'm gonna sign up for Hermann. I'd love to get as much practice in as I can. The only thing I know about cross is from watching racing vids. Anyone practicing, please post it up here and let us all know where and when. I'm totally in -- Leawood, Gilham, I don't care, just need to learn how to do it right and get into good shape.
Gillham park by the Nelson Museum has a lot of stairs, grass and hills as another option. If anyone wants to train there let me know it's 2 min from my house.
Kirk would prefer a Monday or Thursday on Ward Parkway.

In preparation for Hermann, we need to find some stairs. Those stairs off of the ballfield at Hermann will kick your ass after a few laps - or even on the first lap. The rest of the course is flat with lots of sharp turns and a sand section. To me, Leawood Park is the perfect place to train. We have the volleyball courts, lots of grass, and the big hill to run up and re-mount on top of.
Cross season has kind of snuck up on me. I know Hermann is just 4 weeks away, and I haven't done anything CX specific except ride my CX bike - on the road.

We need to nail down some weekly training opportunities. It would be great to get together as a Team or a collection of guys from several teams and train together at least one night a week. That way we would push each other and build that intensity needed to race. Right now, Tuesdays are my only night that's free. If things change at Elite, I may be able to do Wednesdays or Thursdays.

However, we all can do some individual training several times a week to hone the skills needed for Cyclocross. Find a local park, or the parkway, or some single track and ride your CX bike. It won't be fun. It will suck, but it'll be worth it.

Off-Camber turns
Cornering
Slow Speed turns for balance
Riding fast in grass

Start thinking about CX. It'll be here before you know it, and you won't be ready. Well, are any of us really ever ready?
